Atmospheric Composition from Space
The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) is a fairly new instrument currently onboard the Suomi satellite and will soon be operated from NOAA’s JPSS satellites as well. Trace gas retrieval algorithms are being developed for this instrument.
These retrievals could take the place of data from the Earth Observation System (EOS) thermal infrared (TIR) instruments, all of which have passed their expected lifetimes and have no official replacements. Because trace gas retrievals are vital to the research of many atmospheric scientists, the user community must communicate with the retrieval algorithm development community to convey their needs. Such communication will ensure that research that relies in this data will not be compromised once the EOS TIR instruments are retired.
This research focus is being carried out in collaboration with NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS).
AC4 held a user workshop for the Cross-track Infrared Sounder in September. The goals of this workshop were:
· To identify users and applications for both current and potential future CrIS trace gas retrieval products
· To identify the validation needs for these products and develop a strategic plan for addressing them
· To Identify other limitations in the current products (e.g., all gases currently provided in one large file, averaging kernel and other error estimates not commonly provided) and a plan for addressing them
· To disseminate workshop findings and results in the form of a white paper and an opinion piece for publication in EOS Transactions
· To establish a foundation for future collaboration between the retrieval algorithm development community and the user community
A final report of the findings of this workshop is expected to be released Spring 2015.
