Advancing Atmospheric Chemistry Through the Use of Satellite Observations from the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS)

CPO’s Atmospheric Chemistry, Carbon Cycle, & Climate (AC4) program has published a workshop report titled “Advancing Atmospheric Chemistry Through the Use of Satellite Observations from the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS)”
The report, whose lead author is Matthew Alvarado of Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER), is based on the CrIS Atmospheric Chemistry Data User’s Workshop, held Sept. 18-19, 2014 in College Park, MD.
The workshop was held to address the expected retirement of existing NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) instruments, which support the atmospheric science community with trace gas retrievals via thermal infrared satellite observations.
The CrIS instrument, currently aboard the joint NOAA, NASA and DOD Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite could fill this gap. Participants were assembled to discuss the CrIS retrieval algorithm, users and applications of the retrievals, validation of the retrieval products, limitations of current retrievals, and potential new retrieval products.
