The role of remote engagement in supporting boundary chain networks across Alaska

Microsoft Word - ACCAP boundary chain 5.26.15

The Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy (ACCAP), a NOAA RISA team, has a new publication in Climate Risk Management. The report–”The role of remote engagement in supporting boundary chain networks across Alaska,”–highlights ACCAP’s work on a webinar series regarding satellite sites and how they increase networking and engagement both between sites and within participants at the site.

 In the paper, the authors highlighted two quotes by webinar speakers, which demonstrated the importance of webinars and remote engagement to ACCAP’s work:

“In a place like Alaska where travel distance is large and long, this is a good way to efficiently get [climate] information to people across the state, and out of state.”

“When you are working across the entire state of Alaska, or in our case in Alaska, Northwest Territories, Yukon territory, and British Columbia, there’s no way to get people face to face at that frequency.”

The report found that:

  • Webinars serve as effective boundary object to connect science and practice;
  • Remote engagement enables learning, decision application, and network development;
  • Remote engagement overcomes constraints associated with geographic isolation;
  • Partnering with other boundary organizations provides mutual benefits and synergies.

This paper was authored by ACCAP PI Sarah Trainor and ACCAP Research Scientist Nathan Kettle.
