Communities across the country are increasingly demanding better forecasts to help them grapple with extreme events. To address these needs, NOAA, in partnership with other agencies and universities, is developing and implementing a new global prediction system by incorporating the latest research in modeling and data assimilation from NOAA and the external community. The latest key milestone is the National Weather Service (NWS) Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP) Coordination Meeting to advance its Unified Forecast System (UFS), which builds on the Next Generation Global Prediction System (NGGPS) through a multi-year plan. This meeting brought together representatives from NOAA and its labs, other agencies, and universities, and highlighted the robust research and transition activities that the NOAA Research Modeling, Analysis, Predictions, and Projections (MAPP) Program has supported over the years with its NWS partners now contributing to the UFS.
NOAA Research’s Annarita Mariotti, Director of the MAPP Program, presented on MAPP-funded efforts, many in partnership with the NWS/NGGPS program, to improve modeling and data assimilation capabilities at the NWS National Centers for Environmental Prediction, Environmental Modeling Center. These include projects for model physics, data assimilation and infrastructure. Both MAPP research and transition projects as part of the NOAA Climate Test Bed were featured. Meeting outcomes will help build on the progress of the MAPP projects as part of the SIP and longer term development plans at EMC.
The SIP Coordination Meeting represents a significant step towards advancing goals and preparing to update the SIP for the next three fiscal years. The meeting took place January 31st through February 1st at NOAA’s Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, MD.
