CPO’s NIDIS program, the Texas Water Development Board, and the University of Texas-Arlington will host an interactive workshop on September 12-13 in Arlington, Texas. Participants will learn how NOAA forecasts have been applied in decision-support tools for water management in different states and discuss what steps are needed to integrate NOAA forecasts in reservoir operations and water resources management in Texas and Oklahoma. The workshop will provide an opportunity to start a dialog between reservoir operators, water suppliers, state water agencies, and producers of seasonal and sub-seasonal forecasts and forecast products.

Workshop objectives include to:

  • learn from entities in other parts of the nation that have integrated, or are in the process of integrating, forecasts in operational decision-support tools (e.g., Forecast-Informed Reservoir Operations [FIRO]);
  • identify current and emerging NOAA operational products that can be readily used, for example, in the context of FIRO; and
  • understand the concerns that water operators in Texas and Oklahoma have with using seasonal and sub-seasonal climate forecasts.

Potential outcomes include a set of recommendations on sharing technology and information among entities, and identifying potential collaborative pilot projects that can help demonstrate the feasibility of FIRO in Texas and Oklahoma.

The workshop will be held at the University of Texas at Arlington, Nedderman Hall, Rady Room (6th floor) in Arlington, TX. Breakfast and lunch are included with registration. More details will be provided prior to the workshop.
