On October 19, NOAA launched a new National Marine Ecosystem Status web portal, with contributions from CPO’s Marine Ecosystem Risk Team (MERT). The portal provides data on a number of indicators that track the status and trends of seven major marine ecosystems across the United States as well as a national synthesis. A product of a multi-year effort spearheaded by the cross-NOAA Integrated Ecosystem Assessments program, it provides easy access to NOAA’s wide range of essential coastal and marine ecosystem data in one location for the first time. The web portal will provide the interested public, educators, outreach specialists, natural resource managers, and others a starting point to explore the status of these seven marine ecosystems and the nation at-a-glance. MERT is leveraging the Assessment program’s partnership with the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information and North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies, by connecting their expertise in sustaining and maintaining indicators with the Integrated Ecosystem Assessment program’s effort.
