On July 13 at noon, the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus will launch one of the first regional climate plans in the United States. Co-authored by CPO’s Communication, Education, and Engagement (CEE) Division and the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, this is the first such plan to serve the Chicago metropolitan region, which is home to nearly 10 million people in more than 280 cities, towns, and villages.

The plan documents current climate conditions, sets emissions targets, calls municipal leaders to action, and describes strategies for successful implementation to help Chicago take action to mitigate climate change and to adapt to the unavoidable impacts of climate-related hazards.

The plan is the result of nearly two years of work involving 270 stakeholders from 175 organizations, including representatives of 53 municipalities and counties, and drawn from more than 50 local and international sustainability and climate plans. It was developed with support from the European Union and is aligned with the Global Covenant of Mayors and the Greenest Region Compact. To guide the plan’s development, the CPO-led U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit (CRT) team supported a series of engagements and provided editorial support. The plan also leverages the CRT’s Steps to Resilience Framework.

The virtual launch event is hosted by the Metropolitan Planning Council. Registration is free but required.
