NOAA Fisheries announced today that researchers have developed new global forecasts of marine heatwaves. These forecasts, described in the journal Nature, can provide up to a year’s advance notice of marine heatwaves. They could help fishing fleets, ocean managers, and coastal communities anticipate the effects of marine heatwaves. This study was funded by CPO’s Modeling, Analysis, Predictions and Projections program and the NOAA Fisheries Office of Science and Technology.
