Join us at AGU for the NOAA GeoXO Atmospheric Composition Town Hall on Thursday, December 15th!

Join us for the NOAA's Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) Satellite Atmospheric Composition Capabilities Town Hall at the AGU 2022 Fall Meeting on Thursday, December 15th.

NOAA’s GeoXO mission is a ground-breaking effort to address future environmental challenges in support of U.S. weather, ocean, and climate operations. GeoXO will continue and significantly expand observations provided by the GOES-R Series, while bringing new operational capabilities to address emerging environmental issues and their societal consequences. The recommended observations on GeoXO include hyperspectral observations in the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared, visible and infrared imaging during day and night time, and lightning mapping. The combination of these observing systems will provide an exciting new ability to continuously measure the abundance and sources of trace gases and aerosols over much of North America. Potential GeoXO operational atmospheric composition (AC) products at hourly temporal resolution, compared to the once-per-day data currently available from low-earth-orbiting instruments, offer new opportunities for understanding, monitoring, and predicting air quality, weather, climate—and their interconnections—along with their relationships with human health and environmental justice.

This Town Hall will provide an overview of GeoXO’s recommended AC capabilities and give a status update on the planning process leading up to the expected launch in early 2030s. It will also describe NOAA’s efforts to engage the AC user community in planning applications for the future datasets.
