The NOAA Blue Carbon Inventory (BCI) Project participated in a virtual workshop with the Government of Indonesia Ministry of Environment and Forestry (Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan – KLHK) on May 10th, 2023. The workshop was focused on opportunities for technical exchange on blue carbon and remote sensing, and other US agencies including NASA, USGS, and FWS were in attendance.
CPO’s Lisa Vaughan kicked off the presentation with a high level overview and introduction to the NOAA Blue Carbon Inventory Project. This project provides capacity building focused on two main goals; the inclusion of blue carbon habitats (primarily mangroves and seagrasses) in country level greenhouse gas inventories so that their contribution to greenhouse gas reductions can be included in nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and tracked, and the long-term sustainable management of these critical habitats.
Rebeca Brenes (Silvestrum Climate Associates), who provides technical expertise for the NOAA BCIP, provided a presentation on the NOAA BCIP experience in Costa Rica as a case study. The presentation provided an overview of enabling conditions and key lessons learned from the NOAA BCIP experience in Costa Rica to provide some insight on country-level capabilities that could be implemented in Indonesia based on their needs and priorities.
The NOAA BCIP collaborated with NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NESDIS) to provide an overview of seagrass and blue carbon satellite data capabilities. The Government of Indonesia has identified seagrass mapping as a priority area for their needs, so the cross-NOAA line office collaboration was an essential component to the workshop. The NOAA BCIP is excited to continue their engagements with the Government of Indonesia and participate in an in-country workshop this summer.
