The NOAA Climate & Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (C&GC) held their biannual Summer Institute last week in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Delayed by one year due to the pandemic, current fellows, alumni, and invited speakers gathered to share their research and discuss topics related to usable and actionable science. Fellows presented research on climate dynamics, wildfires, paleoclimate, ocean science, ecology, and biogeochemistry. The fellowship program has developed an outstanding reputation of attracting the best and the brightest PhDs in the sciences relevant to CPO’s mission, and the institute allows the exploration of collaboration and sharing ideas across disciplines. Participants of the institute had thoughtful dialogue about how to balance actionable and basic climate science, the value of interdisciplinary science, and how to effectively communicate with climate research stakeholders. The C&GC Program is sponsored by NOAA’s Climate Program Office and managed by The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research’s (UCAR) Cooperative Programs for the Advancement of Earth System Science.
