AC4 Program holds inaugural PI meeting for Atmospheric Composition from Space Working Group

This week, the AC4 Program convened its satellite-relevant principal investigators (PIs) for the inaugural PI meeting of the Atmospheric Composition from Space Working Group (ACS WG) during the JPSS/GOES-R Summit. As interactions between NOAA Research and NESDIS expand on atmospheric composition, there is a need for a more organized voice from the NOAA Research users and connections with NESDIS operational products. As a result, the ACS WG was established to:

  • promote the development and applications of space-based atmospheric composition products at NOAA;
  • provide an expert voice on the need to develop atmospheric composition products from JPSS, GOES and any future NESDIS instrument (including currently planned geostationary Cross-track Infrared Sounder-like instrument);
  • keep current with the latest development of atmospheric composition products and their applications at NOAA and externally (two-way communication);
  • exchange best practices and express the needs of atmospheric composition research community on working in an operational NESDIS environment (e.g. data access and availability);
  • improve current NESDIS/STAR products, especially by identifying best sources of validation data; and
  • identify research needs that could inform future priorities of the AC4 Program.

The PI meeting was an opportunity to complement the atmospheric composition sessions at the Summit, and continue AC4 efforts to leverage existing meetings to hold PI meetings.
