NOAA’s Climate Program Office (CPO) is pleased to announce that its Fiscal Year 2023 grant competitions are now open.
The increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather and climate events are taking a heavy toll on our Nation. Last year came in second to 2020 in terms of number of weather- and climate-related disasters with a total of 20 events and third in total costs of such disasters at $145 billion. 2021 was unusually deadly with at least 688 direct or indirect fatalities which is the most disaster-related fatalities since 2011.
As communities grapple with decisions affected by a changing climate, this year’s solicitation includes six competitions to advance understanding and prediction of climate, and ultimately help Americans plan and respond.
Approximately $11.1 million will be available in FY23 to start new awards in about six different topic areas, pending budget appropriations.
The competition topics include:

collecting methane measurements and improving modeling across spatial and temporal scales,
-
advancing model-based understanding, monitoring, prediction, predictability, and representation of drought,
-
exploring the representation of processes and phenomena that serve as sources of predictability in earth system modeling research,
-
advancing precipitation-related dataset development and analysis,
-
applications of satellite data to aerosol research, and
-
building resilience and promoting adaptation of U.S. marine fisheries and fishing communities.
Letters of intent are due September 1, 2022 at 5pm ET. Full applications are due November 21, 2022 at 5pm ET.
Several topics align with the four high-priority climate risk areas—coastal inundation, marine ecosystems, water resources, and extreme heat—that CPO is focusing on to enhance its investments and improve our nation's resilience with user-driven solutions. Prior to submitting applications, investigators are highly encouraged to learn more about CPO and its programs, as well as specific program priorities for FY 2023.
By finding and funding world-class climate science, CPO provides authoritative, actionable information to ensure better decision-making and enable people, businesses, and the environment to thrive in the face of a changing climate and its impacts.
