RISA and Sea Grant team up with states to map flooding during Hurricane Joaquin

From Southern Florida to Maryland, RISA teams (CISA and SCIPP), Sea Grant programs, and other organizations coordinated a rapid response effort to map coastal flooding during Hurricane Joaquin using a new smartphone app developed by Wetlands Watch.
Due to the prolonged nature of storm surge impacts from Hurricane Joaquin, those involved expected substantial coastal flooding and erosion. SCIPP RISA PI Hal Needham detailed the phenomena in his blog: http://stormsurge2010.blogspot.com.
The Sea Level Rise Smartphone App allowed a manager in each state to designate trained observers who will map flooding across the eastern seaboard. Mobilizing this multi-state network provided an opportunity to use this innovative tool to help look at localized flooding issues and improve understanding of inundation factors at a local level.
Local managers have the flexibility to use their knowledge and needs to decide on monitoring sites, providing valuable information for those involved. This collaborative rapid response effort illustrates the value of having networks in place and ready to respond when an extreme event occurs.
