Particular focuses included the need for increased understanding of subsurface parameters; the ability of multiple labs and programs to provide needed climate expertise and information; and a desire to engage in an iterative process of project and tool development with sanctuary partners.

New CPO-supported research found that decreasing Arctic sea ice has been an important contributor to changes in atmospheric circulation and temperature, both factors promoting Greenland’s surface melt. 

NOAA’s Climate Monitoring program competitively selected two new three-year projects totaling $855,734 in grants to produce observation-based global and (preferably) regional indices that facilitate monitoring the status, trends, extremes, and variability of ocean physical properties for the benefit of research, predictions, and decision makers. The two new projects join 13 multi-year projects totaling $2.2 million, that were funded last year in the same competition.
