Jin Huang and Annarita Mariotti - NOAA’s operational climate monitoring products and predictions are a core part of NOAA’s mission to support economic vitality and protect American lives and resources. These are produced by the National Weather Service (NWS)/National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and aim at providing the public with critical information about conditions for better preparedness and improved resiliency including outlooks from a few weeks to several seasons ahead for quantities such as precipitation, temperature, tropical hazards, drought, and other societally-relevant climate system impacts.
The mission of NOAA Climate Test Bed (CTB) is to accelerate the transition of research advances into improved NOAA operational climate models, monitoring and predictions. The NOAA CTB is jointly supported by OAR (Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research) and NWS. The OAR’s Modeling, Analysis, Predictions, and Projections (MAPP) program provides grants support and NCEP provides infrastructure support to CTB’s testing and demonstration phase. NCEP is also responsible to support the operational implementation phase.
The purpose of this webinar is to familiarize the research community with the NOAA Climate Test Bed and its functioning. Part I of this webinar will provide a programmatic overview of the NOAA Climate Test Bed, including status and plans for current ongoing projects. Part II will focus on the process and requirements for CTB projects pertaining to their selection, execution and final evaluation.
Hendrik Tolman - Transition to operations of models is often called "the valley of death". The process is time consuming and not always transparent. This presentation will address the necessary business models behind transitions to operations, as well as efforts to streamline and accelerate this process. Keys to an efficient T2O process are i) Operations to research to operations (O2R2O) practices and ii) strategic planning of models in an integrated modeling suite, and iii) community modeling efforts with iv) rigorous code management practices.
