A team of researchers supported by CPO’s International Research and Applications Project (IRAP) will convene a one-day workshop in Puerto Rico in February 2020 focused on the development of usable knowledge related to linkages among heat, hurricanes, and public health. Developing a better understanding of these linkages could help improve hurricane disaster planning efforts as well as inform immediate post storm recovery preparations.
The goals of the workshop are to:
1) establish a network of experts who work in fields related to public health, heat, and hurricane hazards;
2) build knowledge about current public health problems related to heat and hurricanes; and
3) advance the identification, improvement, and expansion of existing risk preparedness information for public health.
Part of an ongoing two year research project to enhance resilience and public health through the use of climate information, the workshop is being organized by the team of IRAP researchers from the University of Arizona, Tulane University, the University of Colorado’s RISA Western Water Assessment, Columbia University’s International Research Institute for Climate and Society, the University of Puerto Rico, and the Department of Health of Puerto Rico. In addition, the team is partnering with the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center.
