Research improves drought communication to decision makers in North Carolina

A recently completed project developed recommendations to better communicate drought to decision makers and resources that present user-driven drought information in infographics and fact sheets. The project, “Innovating Approaches to Drought Communications with North Carolina Decision Makers,” was led by the State Climate Office of North Carolina and the Carolinas Integrated Sciences and Assessments (a CPO Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (RISA) team) and funded by the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) through CPO’s Sectoral Applications Research Program (SARP) Coping with Drought Initiative.

This project focused on improving the usability of drought information in North Carolina through a better understanding of how drought is monitored, climatic and environmental conditions that can cause or worsen drought conditions, and drought impacts on various sectors. Outcomes include resources such as infographics and factsheets that are being used by sectors such as agriculture, forestry, and water resources. While it focused on North Carolina, the information is presented in a way that makes it easy for other states or municipalities to apply.
