Atmospheric rivers are responsible for transporting moisture thousands of miles and providing up to 50% of West Coast precipitation in certain locations. The temperatures of storm systems supplied with water by ARs play a vital role in determining the impacts of an AR event.

Work supported by CPO's AC4 program found that the effects of melting permafrost in the Arctic could cost $43 trillion in extra economic damage by the end of the next century, on top of the more than the $300 trillion economic damage already predicted.

Contribution of sea surface carbon pool to organic matter enrichment in sea spray aerosol

Research funded by CPO’s Atmospheric Chemistry, Carbon Cycle, and Climate (AC4) program was published in Nature Geosciences.  The article assesses the relationship between the organic carbon content of sea water and freshly emitted sea spray aerosol in the North Atlantic as well as the coastal waters of California.
