CPO leads NOAA engagement for a White House public-private partnership on Climate Services for Resilient Development (CSRD)

whitehouse

The NOAA Climate Program Office is working closely with USAID and OSTP on the U.S.-initiated public-private partnership on Climate Services for Resilient Development (CSRD), which was originally announced by President Obama during the September 2014 UN Climate Summit.
This novel partnership includes organizations from the private, multilateral development, government and public/NGO sectors (Google, Esri, Skoll Global Threats Fund, American Red Cross, UK Met, UK DFID, Asian Development Bank, InterAmerican Development Bank). We anticipate that this partnership could provide NOAA with opportunities to expand resilience work at the global, regional, national and community levels. This also serves as a U.S. contribution to the Global Framework for Climate Services, of which NOAA has the lead on. NOAA participated in the following three recent CSRD activities.

  1. A high-profile Partnership launch at the U.S. Institute for Peace on June 9th, which included Laura Furgione (deputy director, NWS) participating on a panel with the United Kingdom on “Opportunities for Intergovernmental Partnerships on Climate Data and Tools”.
  2. Signing of a “Collaborative Arrangement between the U.S. and the U.K. on Climate Data and Services for Resilience”, which NOAA helped develop with USAID, UK Met, and the U.K Department of International Development.
  3. Three days of discussions with the CSRD Founding Partners to develop governance and implementation strategies in the initial three focus countries (Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Columbia), which included technical expertise participation from OAR/CPO and NWS.

NOAA coordination into this effort is led by OAR/CPO, in close partnership with NWS/International.
