CPO’s Marine Ecosystem Risk Team (MERT), a cross program team, kicked off their partnership with the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries this week with the onboarding of the ONMS-CPO shared position: Climate Coordinator/Visiting Scientist, Dr. Zac Cannizzo. Dr. Cannizzo coordinated climate work across the sanctuaries during his Knauss Fellowship, with highlights including:

  • creating science-based summaries of the current and projected impacts of climate change in 12 national marine sanctuaries and Papahanaumokuakea marine national monument;
  • developing a web-based learning exchange to improve staff understanding of climate change, climate-smart management, and climate communication; and
  • coordinating with interagency partners to more fully integrate climate change considerations into the management of the nation’s Marine Protected Areas.

He will continue this important work at ONMS, while expanding his role at NOAA to support MERT in the development of a research agenda within the OAR Climate Program Office to support Sanctuaries climate needs. MERT seeks to bring CPO’s capabilities to bear to support NOAA and NOAA partner’s ability to manage climate risks, with contributions from the Earth System Science and Modeling Division, Climate and Societal Interactions, Communication, Education and Engagement, and Director’s Office.
