ASAP launches pilot program for private sector climate service providers in the Great Lakes

Funded by a small grant from Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments (GLISA), a CPO RISA team, the American Society of Adaptation Professionals (ASAP) is launching a pilot program to strengthen for-profit climate service providers’ competencies for using and building upon the climate data, information, services, and strategies that have been developed primarily by the public and non-profit sectors. This project includes:

  • assessing for-profit climate service providers’ practices and needs regarding climate data and information;
  • hosting a workshop with stakeholders from across the climate data, information, and service marketplace; and
  • developing a plan to scale this work nationally and transfer the model to specific additional regions.

Between 2016 and 2018, for-profit members of ASAP increased from 15% to over 30%. Climate Change Business Journal estimates the United States climate adaptation and resilience services market at $650 million in 2018. Growth has been in the double digits and the forecast is for that rate to continue in the short term at 12-15% per year to at least 2022. The shifting demographics and increased demand for climate services signal the need to acknowledge, study, and experiment with the relationship between the public and private sector.

The responsiveness of the RISA model to local decision makers often places individual teams in collaborative roles with private entities contracted by city and county governments. Through this project, GLISA will explore a developed version of this complementary relationship. GLISA provides guidance as a trusted resource for useful and usable climate information in the Great Lakes region, service providers standardize the future climate information used in projects across the region, disparate organizations center justice and equity as core values, and the public and private sectors innovate together.

This project is funded by a 2019 Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments (GLISA) small grant to ASAP. CPO Communication, Education, and Engagement Division’s Ned Gardiner will participate on ASAP’s advisory group for the dissemination of climate model information.
