Chill Out: Cooling of Coastal Surface Waters Impacts Hurricane Intensity

Tropical storms like 2011’s Hurricane Irene experienced cooling in the coastal surface waters ahead of the eye of the hurricane, which reduced storm intensity, according to a CPO-funded study by Rutgers’ University Professor Scott Glenn and partners published in Nature Communications.

Fulfilling Observing System Implementation Requirements with the Global Drifter Array

Recent research supported by CPO's Climate Observation Division and published in the Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology examines the 5x5 degree resolution requirements for the Global Ocean Observing System's surface temperature and velocity measurements.

A reanalysis of Hurricane Camille 13 April 2016

A reanalysis of Hurricane Camille

A modern look at one of the United States’ most destructive hurricanes indicates that it was deeper than, but not quite as intense as, originally estimated. This research, funded by CPO’s Climate Observation Division, changed the ranking intensity of Hurricane Camille.
