Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force releases new strategy report

A strategy report, outlining a set of principles and recommendations to guide recovery and rebuilding efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, was released on Monday, Aug. 19. The goal of the report – developed by President Obama’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force – is to support recovery and rebuilding efforts and to enhance the resilience of communities that face increasing risks from extreme weather in the Sandy-affected region.

The overall rebuilding strategy contains 69 policy recommendations to help homeowners stay in and repair their homes, strengthen small businesses, revitalize local economies, and make sure communities are better able to recover from future storm events.

“This rebuilding strategy will protect families, small businesses and communities across the region, and the taxpayers’ investment in them, from the risks posed by sea level rise and more extreme weather events – risks that are made worse by the reality of a changing climate,” Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, head of the Task Force, said in a statement.

NOAA was engaged in the Task Force’s efforts and development of the strategy report. Many NOAA individuals and programs have been involved in Sandy recovery, providing on-site technical assistance in Joint Field Offices, surveying waterways to ensure safe navigation and commerce, and providing communities with information they need to rebuild to enhance resilience to future storms.

Laura Petes from NOAA’s Climate Program Office coordinated NOAA’s engagement with the Task Force, working closely with NOAA leadership and personnel from multiple line offices, and CPO’s Adam Parris worked with partners from NOAA, FEMA, USACE, CEQ, and USGCRP on the development and release of a Sea Level Rise Planning Tool for the Sandy-affected region.
Parris also co-led a synthesis on the science of sea level rise and coastal flood risk management with NOS’s Maria Honeycutt, which served as scientific underpinning for the Rebuilding Strategy. The synthesis represents a collaboration by NOAA, FEMA, NASA, USGS, and researchers from Columbia University, University of South Carolina, Princeton University, and City University of New York.

NOAA will continue to play a critical role in informing and supporting recovery and rebuilding efforts post-Sandy.
