The National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHS) is pleased to announce the release of the PIRSH methodology, developed under a NOAA Extreme Heat Risk Initiative grant in FY21. The methodology is documented in an American Planning Association report and will be the subject of a webinar on 9 November 2022 hosted by NIHHIS / Heat.gov.

The Plan Integration for Resilience Scorecard for Heat (PIRSH), which builds on the original PIRS developed for other hazards, is a process for spatially scoring municipal plans (all hazards plans, transportation plans, etc.) according to their net effect on urban heat resilience. This approach highlights where the combination of policies that can influence neighborhood development may ultimately be reducing urban heat risk, or where policies may increase heat risk. PIRSH allows planners to reconsider which heat mitigation strategies may be best at the neighborhood scale. Future project outcomes will include several peer-reviewed papers on the methodology and its implementation in specific communities.
PIRSH was developed through a NOAA Extreme Heat Risk Initiative Cooperative Agreement with the University of Arizona (PI: Dr. Ladd Keith) and Arizona State University (Co-I: Dr. Sara Meerow), as well as with the American Planning Association and several representatives from local government in Baltimore, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Houston and Seattle.
