NIDIS and the USDA Climate Hubs are co-hosting a technical workshop on Assessing Drought in a Changing Climate in Boulder, CO on February 28 and March 1, 2023. This workshop will explore the notion that drought assessment is being outpaced by climate change, and determine the implications to drought response and adaptation. The workshop will begin with presentations on extreme events in a non-stationary climate by Dr. Sarah Kapnick, NOAA Chief Scientist, and Gloria Montanio Greene, USDA Deputy Under Secretary of Farm Production and Conservation. A pre-workshop virtual webinar was held on February 10 to review the state of the science.

The objectives of the workshop are to identify (1) immediate actions and long-term recommendations to improve drought assessment and to incorporate climate change information, and (2) identify outstanding research questions that would help advance the science of drought assessment and provide science-based knowledge in support of federal drought programs and partners.

A synthesis paper with the outcomes will be developed after the workshop.
