The Tribal Coastal Resilience Portfolio of the Northwest Climate Resilience Collaborative (NCRC), a NOAA Climate Adaptation Partnerships (CAP) team recently published a report titled “Climate Adaptation Barriers and Needs Experienced by Northwest Coastal Tribes.” NCRC produced the report in collaboration with the University of Washington Climate Impacts Group, the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, and Washington Sea Grant to better understand the state of climate adaptation among Northwest coastal Tribes. The report also elevates Tribes’ experience of key barriers and needs that if addressed, could help advance Tribal resilience.
To inform the report, NCRC conducted a series of listening sessions with Tribal staff, citizens and elected officials and a review of Tribal climate documents and other relevant reports. Results suggest that Northwest coastal Tribes face significant barriers and unmet needs in realizing their adaptation goals, despite being leaders in climate adaptation. Key barriers and needs focus around five key areas: 1) funding; 2) Tribal staff and workforce capacity; 3) collaboration and partnerships; 4) technical assistance and climate services; and 5) communication, education and outreach.
This report is intended to build awareness of these challenges among funders, policy makers, climate services providers, and others to mobilize necessary action in support of the climate adaptation efforts of Northwest coastal Tribes. It has been featured in multiple news outlets such as the Associated Press and the Seattle Times.
