Advancing scientific understanding of climate, improving society’s ability to plan and respond
Supported in part by CPO’s Atmospheric Chemistry, Carbon Cycle, and Climate (AC4) Program, scientists from two University of Colorado institutes and NOAA participated in an intensive field campaign that used instrumented aircraft and vans to investigate the causes or sources of a methane hotspot in the U.S. Southwest.
This work aims to help scale up and accelerate the pace of climate adaptation and mitigation activities all across the nation.
An interactive webinar, led by the CPO Marine Ecosystems Risk Team (MERT), featured NOAA CoastWatch staff and focused on how the CoastWatch data, tools, and capabilities can be used to inform sanctuaries science and management, including climate change assessment and adaptation.
The webinar will focus on climate adaptation investments and strategies to build more resilient communities, as well as the challenges and costs of incorporating climate considerations into local planning efforts.
The webinars will facilitate improved understanding of the Program and the 2021 Funding Opportunity, which will usher in an exciting new phase for the RISA program in responding to decision maker needs, Congressional direction, and strengthening a community of NOAA, federal, state, local, and tribal partners.
The Strategy will lead to improved drought monitoring, forecasting, and resilience for tribal nations.
NOAA Climate.gov recently published an article, “Climate & French fries,” exploring the impact of climate change on America’s potato crop and French fry industry, and referencing Sectoral Applications Research Program (SARP).
The study, funded in part by CPO’s Climate Variability & Predictability (CVP) program, investigates the dynamic processes that influence submesoscale fronts in the Northwest Pacific subtropical counter-current (STCC) system.
Research funded by two AC4 awards used observations from three long-term networks to update or “constrain” the chemical transport model mechanisms to more accurately represent the indirect formation and month-to-month variability of organic aerosol in the US southeast.
This work, funded by CPO’s Climate Variability & Predictability (CVP) program as part of NOAA’s contributions to the Tropical Pacific Observing System (TPOS) process studies, demonstrates how increasing the vertical resolution of ocean models can reduce commonly observed biases in the two regions.
