In 2020, the joint CPO-NMFS Climate and Fisheries Adaptation Program (CAFA) funded projects to develop integrated climate-fisheries modeling frameworks in four regions, which will evaluate fisheries management and adaptation strategies and serve as pilot projects for the NOAA Climate and Fisheries Initiative. This April 29th webinar will discuss the project in the Northeast region.
Based on primary data that documented the impacts of and recovery from Hurricane Sandy in New York City, researchers identified which of the common indicators reflect vulnerability and resilience to coastal flooding in urban areas.
The new web portal provides data on a number of indicators that track the status and trends of seven major marine ecosystems across the United States as well as a national synthesis.

NOAA’s Coastal and Ocean Climate Applications (COCA) Climate and Fisheries Program, in partnership with NOAA Fisheries’ Office of Science and Technology, has competitively awarded five new projects to support sustainable fisheries management in a changing climate. The new projects will assess implications for fish stocks, fisheries, and the communities and economies that depend on them. The
Participants identified rising ocean temperatures; ocean acidification and carbonate dynamics; the impacts of climate variability and change on deep water ecosystems; extreme events; and the ability to predict and project these changes at temporal and spatial scales meaningful to sanctuaries as the most pressing needs.
Originally developed through a 2009 CPO/Coastal and Ocean Climate Applications (COCA) Program project, the tool, called “VCAPS,” is designed to assist communities in becoming more resilient to climate change and weather events through local vulnerability assessments and climate adaptation planning.
