Coastal Resilience

The AdSci Coastal Resilience program element addresses the needs of decision-makers at various levels dealing with complex climate-related issues in coastal and marine environments. The program element is designed to support partnerships and engagement,in the development and transfer of climate-related research and information to advance the resilience of coastal communities and coastal/marine ecosystems.

Mission

The Mission of AdSci Coastal Resilience is to support coastal communities with interdisciplinary applications research aimed at addressing climate-related challenges in the coastal and marine ecosystems. This will be done by:

  • Assessing coastal communities for vulnerability to extreme events;
  • Advancing partnerships and creating communities of practice to leverage resources;
  • Investing in research that integrates climate science in all its facets;

Issue

Americas’ health, security and economic wellbeing are tied to our climate and weather. 40 percent of the nation’s population live in U.S. coastal counties. Annually, coastal counties produce more than $9.5 trillion in goods and services, employ 58.3 million people, and pay $3.8 trillion in wages. Coastal communities are experiencing impacts from a changing climate, eroding coastlines, increased coastal and inland flooding and increased frequency of extreme events such as hurricanes, and nor’easters. These impacts disproportionately affect more vulnerable coastal populations, many of which face barriers to implementing new strategies for addressing climate-related risks comprehensively.

Program Element History

Climate change and the impacts caused by it such as coastal flooding, sea level rise, increased shoreline erosion, etc. are some of the most significant challenges of the 21st century. The Climate and Societal Interactions (CSI) division launched the AdSci Coastal Resilience program element in response to this need, and builds on work from the Coastal and Ocean Climate Applications (COCA) Program  by supporting activities designed to accelerate, expand, and enhance the effectiveness and scale of adaptation and resilience planning and implementation in the face of complex coastal challenges through collaborative science, engagement, and innovation.

In FY21, the Coastal Resilience and Water Resources program elements specifically encouraged proposals that focused on climate-sensitive flooding and related impacts in areas with vulnerable populations. These advances will also support the goals of CPO’s initiative to apply its core capabilities and align investments with partners in a set of climate-related risk areas, including coastal inundation.

Partnerships

AdSci Coastal Resilience is working internally with many partners within the Department of Commerce and NOAA (e.g., the National Ocean Service, the National Marine Fisheries Service, the National Institute of Standards and Technology) and externally with agencies such as National Science Foundation (NSF), the US Fish and Wildlife Federation (USFWS), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), the Pew Charitable Trust, to advance research that will help our coastal communities more resilient.
