The three goals of this proposal are to: (i) provide a new model estimate of the ocean carbon uptake over 1990-present, constrained by data from the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) and the Climate Variability and Predictability Program (CLIVAR); (ii) provide new model diagnostics that will connect surface fluxes of CO2 with the ocean interior distribution of carbon; and (iii) evaluate the uncertainties in modeled carbon uptake due to model deficiencies (systematic error) and natural variations in the climate system (random error).
