How MAPP's research is relevant to CPO's Climate Risk Areas

Starting in 2019, CPO began a process of organizing its research efforts around climate risk areas to highlight connectivity across CPO, and to coordinate and increase the relevance of CPO’s research investments to high-impact climate risks. Four initial Climate Risk Areas were chosen: (1) Marine Ecosystems, (2) Heat and Human Health, (3) Coastal Inundation, and (4) Water Resources. Each Risk Area corresponds to an individual CPO Risk Team, which are focused on developing targeted initiatives to advance specific elements of each risk area. In addition to these Teams, the CPO programs are focused on advancing science and capabilities in the broader Risk Area.

MAPP is contributing to this effort in two ways. MAPP management is participating in a number of the Risk Teams, and MAPP’s programmatic investments are targeted for relevance to the broad Risk Areas, when possible. The capabilities that may result from the research investments of programs like MAPP open up new opportunities for the Risk Teams in the future. Previous Research Areas

The Modeling Analysis Predictions and Projections Program supports research that provides direct and foundational support in mitigating the impacts of major climatic societal challenges targeted by NOAA. These research areas include climate and Earth system modeling technologies to improve the simulation of climate variability, predictions of future climate variations from weeks to decades, and projections of long-term future climate conditions.

MAPP engages with the external research community on high priority research areas, extending NOAA’s internal research capability and sustaining scientific advancements in the broad community in coordination with other agencies and institutions. MAPP-supported research focuses on the coupling, integration, and application of Earth system models and analyses across NOAA, agencies, and the external research community
