The NOAA Climate and Fisheries Adaptation (CAFA) Program FY23 Funding Opportunity Promoting Resilience and Adaptation of US Marine Fisheries and Fishing Communities was released on July 29, 2022, and is currently soliciting proposals to address two types of research:
- Type A: Advancing multidisciplinary systems to evaluate strategies that promote resilience and adaptation of fish stocks, fisheries, and fishing communities.
- Type B: Enhancing the effectiveness of locally determined adaptation planning in frontline fishing communities.
Initial letters of intent (LOIs) were due on September 1. The CAFA Program received 81 LOIs from across 9 U.S. regions requesting a total of ~$62.4M in funding support. The distribution of LOIs by type of research, region and institution are shown at this link. The projects described in the LOIs focus on critical species for sustainable fisheries management, support diverse partnerships and investigator teams, promote career opportunities for a next generation workforce, and address key research needs to advance fishing community adaptation.
The CAFA FY23 Funding Opportunity is responsive to OAR and NMFS priorities (NMFS Strategic Plan, Magnuson Stevens Fisheries Conservation & Management Act, Climate, Ecosystems and Fisheries Initiative (CEFI), NMFS Draft Equity & Environmental Justice Strategy, and Climate Program Office’s DEIA Strategic Plan), relevant White House Executive Orders (EO 14008 section 216C), stakeholder input, constituent feedback and supports the goals of the CAFA partnership program
Full proposals for the CAFA FY23 funding opportunity are due by November 21st, 2022.
