On September 28th, 2023 the White House released the National Climate Resilience Framework as part of the Summit on Building Climate Resilient Communities. CPO’s Climate Adaptation Partnerships program (CAP/RISA) is highlighted in the Framework as playing an important role as a regional entity providing on-the-ground support to connect climate information with decision needs (page 18). As part of the Summit, the White House published a fact sheet that included actions that support strengthening local engagement and partnerships announcements; these included CAP RISA’s $3.9M investment in cross regional projects to build national adaptive capacity, and $6M investment in a new Midwest CAP team.

At the Summit, Assistant Secretary for Oceans and Atmosphere (ASOA), Jainey Bavishi announced the launch of the new Midwest CAP team during her plenary. Similarly Senior Advisors to the President, John Podesta and Mitch Landrieu, highlighted CAP/RISA IRA and BIL investments as being critical investments in communities working to adapt to climate change and become resilient to its impacts. CPO/CSI’s Ariela Zycherman, currently on detail as a Special Advisor to ASOA Bavishi, as well as the new Midwest CAP PI Brandi Janssen, and Southern Plains CAP co-PI Mark Shafer were in attendance at the event.
