Want to learn more about how NOAA innovates science, assessment, and equity-centered adaptation in a changing climate? Watch the session titled Climate Services for Decision Makers at the U.S. Center as part of the UN Conference of Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland. This roundtable discussion focused on the practical needs of decision makers in providing clean water, protection from weather events, and preparing for the impacts of climate change. The session was held on November 8th from 3:00-4:00 pm UK (9:00-10:00 am Eastern U.S.), and showcased resources within the US Climate Resilience Toolkit, data services from Regional Climate Centers, and advances in decision support from the Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (RISA) program.
NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad provided framing and introductory remarks that highlighted the way the agency researches, engages, and delivers climate services at multiple scales, across geographies, and to distinct populations, including those who have been underserved. The introduction was followed by a roundtable discussion with four stakeholders representing different kinds of expertise and communities moderated by Ned Gardiner. Panelists include Dr. Radley Horton, Lead PI, Consortium for Climate Risk in the Northeast (CCRUN) RISA; Edith Makra, Metropolitan Mayors Caucus; Sushma Masemore, North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR); and Gigi Owen, Co-PI, Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS) RISA.
The session was co-organized by Ned Gardiner and Tom DiLiberto from CPO’s Climate Engagement and Education Division (CEE), and Caitlin Simpson and Genie Bey from the Climate and Societal Interactions Division (CSI). The event was hybrid, with both in-person and online attendance.
