On February 8, Amber Liggett, Communications Specialist in the Communication, Education, and Engagement (CEE) Division and Tom Di Liberto, NOAA communicator and climate scientist, participated in the DOT Climate Change Center 2024 Webinar Series. As featured speakers, Amber and Tom provided a 30-minute overview of basic climate terminology, the mechanics behind how our climate system functions, observations of our changing climate and evidence that this change is human-caused, impacts of climate change in our communities, and actions we can take to respond to current and future impacts.

This is the second year in a row that CEE’s Climate 101 presentation was requested from U.S. DOT. In the 2023 presentation, we focused the conversation on U.S. DOT employees. After overwhelmingly positive feedback from the employees and their networks, U.S. DOT asked for an updated presentation with information from the Fifth National Climate Assessment that can be shared widely with the transportation industry. This year’s webinar had nearly 300 attendees including professionals in the transportation industry.

The CEE Climate 101 presentation was developed by a CEE Division working group of scientists and communicators. Climate 101 presentations are available to various audiences including Federal agencies, partner communities (e.g., emergency managers, formal and informal educators, etc.), and student organizations as part of the CEE Division’s goal of building climate literacy.
