CPO and NOAA partners sign two cooperative agreements with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research

The new agreements will support collaborative climate and Earth-system science activities related to NOAA’s mission

CPO is announcing two new 5-year cooperative agreements in Fiscal Year 2021 with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) that aim to support research, programs, projects, and other activities related to NOAA’s mission. The cooperative agreements will primarily support these activities through collaborations among scientists and professionals in areas of mutual interest across the full spectrum of NOAA sciences. Awarded through the NOAA Science Collaboration Program (NSCP) and NOAA Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program (CAMP), supported and managed by CPO, the competitively selected projects total $96,029,464 1.

The NSCP cooperative agreement with UCAR supports undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers and scientists with expertise in NOAA-related sciences. This program provides undergraduate-and graduate-level students as well as early career post-graduate and postdoctoral scientists, who possess expertise and interest in NOAA-related sciences, with opportunities to interact and collaborate with NOAA researchers and professionals, such as through NOAA’s Climate and Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. These opportunities enhance understanding and ensure that the nation’s scientists are working to accomplish important goals to preserve and sustain the environment. NCSP also supports complementary Earth systems research and modeling efforts, social science, and interdisciplinary research efforts which can serve as a catalyst for collaborations between NOAA professionals and scientists.

The CAMP cooperative agreement seeks to improve understanding of the current and future state of the climate system, the impacts of environmental change on society, and how climate services and education may help mitigate those impacts. The program supports training and development of student and early career professionals at all levels through visiting scientist appointments, which provide robust research experiences in collaboration with NOAA scientists that will prepare them to address future challenges in climate and Earth system science. CAMP also provides scientific, technical, and administrative expertise to bolster the workforce in NOAA mission sciences and supports NOAA’s climate science enterprise by facilitating collaboration through workshops and other events which enhance understanding.

The two new projects2 funded by CPO in FY21 are:

  • NOAA Science Collaboration Program cooperative agreement with UCAR
    This project seeks to manage postdoctoral fellowship programs; visiting scientist research appointments; scientific community building workshops, summer schools, conferences, and meetings; the free and open sharing of the scholarly output of researchers; and education and outreach conveying the value and importance of NOAA science to multiple stakeholders for the benefit of the nation.

  • NOAA Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program cooperative agreement with UCAR
    This project seeks to manage visiting scientist research appointments; recruit, develop and manage diverse scientific, communications, and administrative personnel; facilitate scientific community building workshops, summer schools, conferences, and meetings; promote scientific research products; and advance education and outreach to promote understanding of climate research and services and Earth system science.
