On January 25 at 9:30 a.m. EST, Ned Gardiner will present NOAA’s Climate Program Office efforts, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus, in developing a climate action plan for the hundreds of municipalities surrounding the city of Chicago. The plan addresses both mitigation and adaptation, setting goals of net zero greenhouse gas emissions and persistent, equitable climate adaptation efforts by the year 2050.
The plan was made possible by essential, foundational climate assessment work (at national, regional, state, and local levels); by greenhouse gas accounting for northeastern Illinois; and by previously completed vulnerability and risk analyses. Political motivation came from the European Union and the Caucus’ Greenest Region Compact team, who had previously gained sustainability pledges from 132 municipalities representing four counties, 10 councils of government, and 6.2 million residents.
