CPO’s MAPP to co-host upcoming exploratory workshop on sub-seasonal forecasting based on NMME


The OAR/CPO Modeling, Analysis, and Predictions and Projections (MAPP) program, together with the National Weather Service/National Centers for Environmental Predictions (NWS/NCEP) Climate Prediction Center (CPC), will hold a workshop to explore advancing sub-seasonal forecasting as a follow-on to the North American Multi-Model Ensemble (NMME), a state-of-the-art prediction system. The “NMME Sub-seasonal Forecast System Exploratory Workshop” will be held March 30-31, 2015 at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction Conference Center in College Park, Maryland. The workshop will attract participants from the research, operational and application communities, including scientists and stakeholders from the public and private sectors, and agency representatives. CPO/MAPP’s role in sponsoring and organizing this event reflects OAR’s ongoing leadership in supporting research to advance prediction at the weather-climate interface (i.e., Week 3 and 4 forecasts) in support of NWS mission requirements.
This workshop comes as the current NMME-Phase II seasonal forecast system is planned to be transitioned from a research system to a NWS operational tool for use by NCEP forecasters. The NMME system was initiated as a NOAA Climate Test Bed project and continually supported by CPO’s MAPP program, with contributions by NSF, DOE and NASA. The transition of the NMME seasonal system into operations represents the culmination of several years of research cooperation and collaboration among leading U.S. and Canadian forecasting organizations.
