A session proposed by the CPO Marine Ecosystem Risk Team has been accepted for the 5th International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5), scheduled to be held February 3-9, 2023 in Vancouver, Canada. The session, titled “Climate science fundamentals for MPA managers: Understanding and working with uncertainty” leverages the knowledge MERT has gained from working with Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS) and the National Marine Protected Areas Center. The session will center on an interactive activity intended to improve the comfort of MPA managers with the fundamentals of climate change science and uncertainty necessary to take the critical steps of climate change assessment and management. Improving the understanding of and comfort with climate science and uncertainty is a particular need for many international MPA managers.

IMPAC5 is an international conference that draws MPA managers and practitioners from around the world. Thus, this session will allow CPO and MERT to expand its interaction with MPA managers by leveraging its world-class climate change communication, and experience gained through the MERT initiative. This session is also part of an overarching goal of the Marine Ecosystems Risk Team (MERT) initiative to increase collaboration between national marine sanctuaries and CPO to more successfully communicate the role of climate information in sanctuary and MPA management.
