National Climate Assessment Societal Indicators Report Released

In April 2011, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) co-hosted a workshop on Climate Change Impacts and Responses: Societal Indicators for the National Climate Assessment (NCA). A group of 56 experts were convened to share their experiences. Participants brought a wide range of disciplinary expertise in the social and natural sciences, sector experience, and knowledge about developing and implementing indicators for a range of purposes.
Participants included representatives from federal and state government, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), tribes, universities, and communities. The purpose of the workshop was to assist the NCA in developing a strategic framework for climate- related physical, ecological, and socioeconomic indicators that can be easily communicated with the U.S. population and that will support monitoring, assessment, prediction, evaluation, and decision making.
The resulting workshop report was published January 25, 2012 and was co-authored by Dr. Melissa Kenney (American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the NOAA Climate Program Office), Dr. Robert Chen (Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network and NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center), Julie Maldanado (U.S. Global Change Research Program, National Climate Assessment) and Dale Quattrochi (NASA, Marshall Space Flight Center).
The workshop report highlights a number of key issues to consider in developing a NCA indicator framework and has been instrumental in developing the vision for the NCA indicator system. Download the report here. The workshop report is available on the National Climate Assessment website at:
