NIHHIS and NOAA Environmental VizLab Collaborate on Urban Heat Island App

The CPO-led National Integrated Heat Health Information System (NIHHIS) and the NOAA Environmental VizLab, in partnership with CPO’s Communication, Education, and Engagement Division and CAPA Strategies, have produced a new story map that provides access to data from the urban heat island (UHI) mapping campaigns. The story map currently includes data from 17 communities and will be updated with data from the 2021 campaigns when available. Researchers, government offices, and other organizations and users can now easily find and use the data from these campaigns.

Data is shared through a RESTful Service on the internet, which can be accessed by a multitude of GIS software packages and web map applications (both open and commercially licensed) for free. One of the most important features of the service is the interoperable nature of its data, as users can combine georeferenced data layers from other datasets together with the UHI data, allowing infinite opportunities for providing meaning and value to the data.

The story map enables easy viewing of morning, afternoon, and evening predicted ambient temperatures and transects, and direct data access to the underlying output files.  The stored datasets will be used in different mapping applications being planned for the coming years to help decision-makers manage heat risk in their communities.
