Dr.
Annarita
Mariotti
Senior Advisor and Scientist
Federal
Division: DEIA Working Group
Department: Director's Office

Dr. Annarita Mariotti is an accomplished climate scientist with more than twenty years of research experience and numerous publications. In her career she has worked as a researcher in academia, a program director at CPO, a science diplomat in China, and a policy advisor at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). She is now a senior advisor and scientist at CPO contributing to develop and realize a vision for future climate science and actionable information.

During her 2019-2022 detail at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) her work advanced meteorological services and climate science, modeling, and predictions across two Administrations. She led the historical reorganization of the Federal meteorological enterprise to improve weather and climate services under the Interagency Council for Advancing Meteorological Services (ICAMS). Annarita contributed to framing for the Fifth National Climate Assessment under the U.S. Global Change Research Program, and the improvement of climate services. Annarita identified opportunities for next-generation predictions and projections and led the development of a national strategy for Earth system predictability R&D to improve predictions and projections. Annarita bridged disciplines and OSTP teams to spearhead emerging efforts on circular economy innovation for climate mitigation. For her OSTP work, Annarita was honored with the OSTP Certificate of Achievement.

At NOAA during 2011-2019, Annarita developed and directed the Modeling, Analysis, Predictions and Projections (MAPP) Program of the Climate Program Office, a multi-million dollar flagship climate research program. The program established the North American Multi-Model Ensemble seasonal climate prediction system, and achieved many successes in the area of drought, climate projections, and sub-seasonal forecasts. For her NOAA leadership achievements as MAPP Program Director, she is a twice recipient of the Department of Commerce Silver Medal Award.
