Annarita Mariotti, Senior Advisor and Scientist at the Climate Program Office, led the development of a peer-reviewed perspective article on the future of climate predictions and projections in the US. Leaders at six federally-funded climate modeling groups contributed to the article, including Venkatachalam Ramaswamy, Director of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, Brian Gross, former Director of the Environmental Modeling Center at the National Weather Service, and other NOAA staff. Published in the AGU journal Earth’s Future, the article lays out an approach to accelerate progress on US climate predictions and projections. The authors discuss how to achieve tangible outcomes, including improved model resolution, representation of extreme conditions, and customization to support next generation climate services.
