Former NOAA Climate & Global Change Postdoc Named NASA’s First Senior Climate Adviser

Gavin Schmidt

To ensure the Biden Administration’s climate science objectives for NASA are effectively fulfilled, the agency has established a new position of senior climate advisor and selected Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York and former CPO-sponsored NOAA Climate and Global Change (C&GC) Postdoc Fellow, to serve in the role in an acting capacity until a permanent appointment is made.

Gavin has been GISS director since 2014 and was part of the sixth NOAA C&GC class (1996-98). His main research interest is the use of climate modeling to understand past, present, and future climate change, and he has authored or co-authored more than 150 research papers in peer-reviewed literature.

Sponsored by CPO and managed by UCAR, the NOAA C&GC Postdoc Fellowship Program helps create and train the future leading researchers needed for climate studies, to serve the nation and support NOAA’s mission. Over the past 30 years, the Program has developed an outstanding reputation of attracting the best and brightest PhDs in the climate sciences.
