Looking back: A year of forecasts, partnerships and climate information

The International Research Institute for Climate and Society recently released an article taking a look back at their work over the past year, as well as a look ahead to future work this year. 
The International Research and Applications Project (IRAP), funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), supports IRI and the University of Arizona to develop tools and frameworks with local organizations that will increase climate resilience in these vulnerable regions.

Efficiency of short-lived halogens at influencing climate through depletion of stratospheric ozone

As another example of NOAA’s ongoing atmospheric measurements providing an early warning system to ensure sustainable development on global scales, a new study co-authored by Stephen Montzka of ESRL and supported by the CPO/AC4 program has found that atmospheric concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbon (dichloromethane) gas have increased by a factor of 2 since the late 1990s throughout the globe.

CPO-funded ESRL team receives Technology Transfer Award

A team at NOAA Earth Systems Research Laboratory (ESRL), led by Cecelia DeLuca, is one of the recipients of the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) 2015 Technology Transfer Interagency Partnership Award for research that was supported by the Modeling, Analysis, Predictions and Projections (MAPP) Program. The ESRL team is part of MAPP’s software model infrastructure development activities.

New NOAA research to improve prediction systems

NOAA’s Modeling, Analysis, Predictions, and Projections (MAPP) program awarded $1.8 million to support 10 new multi-year projects to help improve NOAA’s climate predictions from two weeks to a year in advance, including extreme conditions. These projects will contribute to the NOAA Climate Test Bed, aimed at accelerating research-based advances in climate prediction and transitioning new tools and techniques to NOAA’s operational services. MAPP is a part of the Climate Program Office, situated within NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.

New NOAA research to advance understanding, prediction, and monitoring of drought

NOAA’s Modeling, Analysis, Predictions, and Projections (MAPP) program awarded $4.3 million to support 17 new multi-year projects to improve our understanding of drought and advance NOAA’s prediction and monitoring capabilities to better anticipate and respond to drought. MAPP is a part of the Climate Program Office, situated within NOAA’s Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.
