The NOAA CPO Modeling, Analysis, Prediction, and Projections (MAPP) and Earth System Science (ESS) programs will host a webinar on the topic of climate extremes and efforts to better understand and predict them on Tuesday, April 8. During this webinar, speakers will touch on tropical cyclones, tornadoes, and drought, focusing on improved scientific understanding of these phenomena and their variability in a climate context as well as efforts to better simulate and predict them on various time scales. During this webinar, speakers will discuss the National Multi Model Ensemble, other subseasonal to seasonal prediction efforts, and predictability of Asian Summer monsoon precipitation. The NOAA CPO Modeling, Analysis, Prediction, and Projections (MAPP) program will host a webinar on the topic of CMIP5 results for North American and CMIP6 plans, Tuesday, February 25. This webinar will discuss ongoing work analyzing CMIP5 20th century simulations and 21st century projections for North America. Talks will highlight ongoing activities of the NOAA CMIP5 Task Force, including work being done with the applications/user community and modeling centers. The NOAA CPO Modeling, Analysis, Prediction, and Projections (MAPP) program will host a webinar on the topic of model development on Tuesday, January 14. This webinar will discuss plans at NCEP and GFDL for next-generation model development as well as three new Climate Process Teams funded by the MAPP program and focused on improving the representation of clouds in NOAA’s climate models and advanced representations of sea ice processes in GFDL climate and Earth system models.

The NOAA CPO Modeling, Analysis, Prediction, and Projections program hosted a webinar on the topic of high-resolution modeling and information on Tuesday, December 17. Producing climate simulations at fine-scale requires significant advances in the understanding of climate processes and model capabilities. The demand for fine-scale information, which drives this research thrust, is great and growing. Many aspects of the applied climate sciences require high-resolution information for accurate planning. Research to develop such information strives to achieve both higher resolution and also more accurate models.
The NOAA CPO Modeling, Analysis, Prediction, and Projections program hosted a webinar jointly with the Climate and Societal Interactions Division on the research and information supporting drought preparedness, Friday, November 22, 2013. The webinar will explore drought research, how that research supports activities and capabilities in the user/decision maker communities, and how drought impacts and risks feed back into research directions.
