Constraining Interannual variability of Air-Sea Gas Exchange in Atmospheric Inversion Models Using Surface Ocean and Satellite Observations

The proposed study will establish regional empirical relationships between seawater pCO2 and temperature, sea-surface height anomaly, mixed-layer depth, and algal biomass. The relationships will be used to extrapolate the influence of individual pCO2 observations over large regions using satellite data. The fluxes derived from the resulting pCO2 field will be constrained to be consistent in the long-term mean with ocean inversion fluxes and will allow the spatial and temporal variability of the surface carbon observations to drive fluxes.
