Climate and weather events such as droughts, heavy rains, flooding, heatwaves and severe storms have substantial implications for human health and well-being around the world. These impacts can have cascading consequences for communities and states within U.S. borders as well as our investments in the private sector, international development, and national security. NOAA’s Climate Program Office, through the International Research and Applications Project (IRAP), will join with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to make research funding available to address key knowledge gaps, and advance the use of climate information and services in the reduction of climate-sensitive health risks through the Belmont Forum’s Collaborative Research Action on Climate, Environment and Health (BF/CRA/CEH).
In partnership with Future Earth, the Belmont Forum launched the call for proposals on March 14, 2019, representing an international partnership among 12 funding institutions from 8 countries. Additional international funding agencies are making plans to engage in the CRA as well. The NOAA National Centers on Environmental Information (NCEI) has also joined CPO in this international effort, and will partner with applicants to ensure access and appropriate use of data to best achieve the goals of the research. In addition to research funds from NSF, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) are providing in-kind resources through the CRA/CEH. NOAA/IRAP funding will focus on understanding, predicting and preventing climate-sensitive health risks through interdisciplinary applied research.
