The lead-PI of The Northwest Climate Resilience Collaborative (NCRC), a NOAA CAP/RISA team, Jason Vogel is a co-editor of a special edition of Sustainability titled “Sustainability and Climate Services: Critique, Integration, and Reimagination.” The special issue contains 10 research articles, reviews, and viewpoints that hopes to provide outside-the-box critique and help to identify and facilitate a ‘next generation’ of weather- and climate-related services. The 33 authors are from three sovereign tribal nations (Tlingit, Haida, Sitka), Chile, France, Germany, Spain, and the United States. The authors are academic and institutional researchers, federal agency program managers, water utility employees, consultants, scientists affiliated with environmental and social advocacy groups, and local and tribal government officials. For this project, the authors sought critical input from practitioners and scholars outside the “regular players” in the climate services community.
The articles cover research and interpretive analyses including:
- Barriers to address structural inequality in large- and medium-sized U.S. municipalities
- The use of climate services to foster transformational adaptation in agrarian communities in East Africa
- Project-program evaluations measuring societal impacts of climate services;
- Using nature-based systems (NbS) replacing or complementing traditional infrastructure in community-based adaptation
- A ‘dialogical link’ between climate services and young people to build civic awareness and drive action to arrest climate change
- and U.S. federal policies that enable climate change adaptation programs at the local level going beyond the co-production model.
